Education Hour

[Education Hour will resume on June 15.]

Join us on Sunday mornings from 9:00am - 9:45am for our rotating classes on various aspects of Christianity such as Scripture, Theology, Church History, and Anglicanism.

SUMMER SESSONS

June 15 – Athanasian Creed – Part 1
On Trinity Sunday, we will confess our faith using the words of the Athanasian Creed instead of the Nicene Creed. The Athanasian Creed proclaims deep truths about the Triune nature of God in very careful and precise language. It does the same regarding the deep truths of Jesus, being fully God and fully man. In Part 1, Fr. John will discuss the meaning and importance of the first part, which focuses on the Trinity, as well as why some Christians do not favor this creed.

June 22 – Athanasian Creed – Part 2
Fr. John will discuss the meaning and importance of the second part of the Athanasian Creed, which focuses on the person and natures of Jesus.

June 29 – Resurrection Bend
Fr. Kyle Logan (our previous rector) will join us over Google Meet. He will give us an update on the new church plant in Bend, Oregon. We continue to support this effort through both prayer and financial contributions.

July 6 – Kit Mills’ Presentation – TBD
Kit Mills, our talented music leader, will be presenting on a topic still to be determined. Kit studied at Wheaton College, where he received a well-rounded education that extended beyond his musical training. He is well-read in literature and theology and will no doubt provide us with a fascinating session.

July 13 – St. Bernard Breviary
Fr. Tim Miller, NAS chaplain, will present on the new St. Bernard Breviary. The breviary offers a beautiful and musical way to pray the Daily Offices.

July 20 – John Donne’s Devotions – Part 1
In 1624, Anglican priest John Donne wrote one of the earliest published books of Christian devotion as he recovered from a serious illness. In "Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions", Donne reflects on sickness, pain, suffering, and death, alongside meditations on the goodness and sovereignty of God. During this session, led by our senior warden, Teresa Gillespie, we will read excerpts from some of his devotions and discuss how these apply to our lives.

July 27 – John Donne’s Devotions – Part 2
Continuing from Part 1, we will read further excerpts from Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions and reflect on their application to our lives. Led by Teresa Gillespie.

August 3 – Apologetics with Deacon Jared Russell
The discipline and study of apologetics aim to help Christians and non-Christians think through challenging questions and objections—both from our own uncertainties and from the skepticism of those who do not yet know Jesus as Lord. Apologists work to provide thoughtful “apologies,” or defenses, of the Christian faith. Dcn. Jared is passionate about apologetics and looks forward to sharing some fascinating highlights with us.

August 10 – Whidbey Island Women’s Clinic
Karen, a director at the Women’s Clinic, will update us on the good work being done at the clinic. Karen trusts in the Lord and is excited to visit with us. We support the clinic, which provides free pregnancy and family services to women and men in our community. Their services rightly and justly seek to care for the life of the unborn children, and to give mothers
and fathers hope.
