The Place for Confirmation in Discipleship
Discipleship for Christians is not an optional add-on, but part of the DNA of the Christian life. It begins at birth, if you were born in a Christian family and baptized as an infant, and it continues until you leave this earth or Christ returns in glory.
Much of Christian teaching and learning takes place in the family and is to be backed up by the various forms of Church school for both young and old. One part of this ongoing discipleship is Confirmation, which involves teaching the basics of what a Christian should know, based on the Catechism. The Catechism can well be used in appropriate ways at all stages of our discipleship-but does have a particular place in preparation for those to be confirmed by the Bishop, assisted by parents, god-parents, and the entire congregation.
Should a congregation have the will to take discipleship seriously then it will also take Confirmation seriously, and keep careful records of who has been confirmed and who has not, lets we send our sheep out among wolves only to be slaughtered. – Bishop John H. Rodgers Jr.
Course Description and Goals
This course offers an opportunity for non-Christians to learn the essentials of faith and put their trust in Jesus as Lord. It offers the opportunity for Christians who have never been confirmed or received into the Anglican communion to be confirmed or received. It also offers ongoing discipleship to Christians already in the Anglican tradition. For the latter group, the course will provide refreshments and clarifications of theological truths. All attendees should expect to learn some new theological insights, because every catechist (teacher) presents these essential topics of the Christian faith through his or her own unique God-given teaching style.
I. Attendance
Members of the course planning to be confirmed or received will be expected to attend all of the classes. Life will inevitably get in the way and some attendees will need to miss a class from time to time. You may miss 25% of the classes (4 classes) and still be confirmed or received. We will be attempting to record each session so that absences can be made up, but technology doesn’t always cooperate.
II. Memorization
Traditionally confirmands have been required to memorize creeds, prayers and texts that are essential to our lives as Christians. As part of our time together we will be memorizing the items listed below.
1. The Apostles’ or Nicene Creed - October 12
2. The Lord's Prayer – October 26
3. The Ten Commandments – November 16
4. CASKET EMPTY or similar mnemonic device for the metanarrative of Scripture – January 25
5. Present The Gospel in 2-3 minutes as if someone who didn’t know it were asking you. – February 15
6. The Comfortable Words (Matt 11:28; John 3:16; 1 Tim 1:15; 1 John 2:1-2) – March 1
III. Course Books
All books are recommended, but not required for the course. Every Anglican should own at least one Book of Common Prayer. The 2019 BCP is not sold on Amazon. You’ll need to go to Anglican House Publishers to purchase one.
